23 and reading science-fiction books?

i am 23 and i love reading science-fiction books.my friends make fun of me for what i read.Do u find a 23 year old guy reading science-fiction strange?how old are ya?

I read plenty of Sci Fi, at least a book a week. I am a 25 year old female. Take the teasing in good humor and enjoy your books!

h**l no, there's nothing weird about that. I can't see why your age would have anything to do with it. Perhaps it may be on the "geekier" side, but as far as I'm concerned, we need more "geeky" people. Sci-fi is a great genre for any age and can be quite exciting if you find the right books (as with most - if not all - genres). It's just personal preference.

If you were reading magazines about celebrities having 2 day marriages, then your friends would have something to laugh about, but until then, it's their problem!

All the "cool" people I know read almost exclusively science fiction/fantasy.

I'm early 20's. I'm also in computer science.

Sci-fi is probably the best of all genres (and by extension fantasy, as science fiction is "fantasy, where science takes the place of magic").

It's the "smart kids"/nerds/boffins who like sci-fi. Are you sure that your friends are making fun of you for reading sci-fi, not just reading?

There appears to be a sillly bias against science fiction. This is apparently related to the fact that up to the 1950's, science fiction was a genre of pulp fiction -- found chiefly in lurid magazines bearing such names as "Thrilling Wonder," "Planet," and "Amazing."

Then, finally, John W. Campbell, the editor of several science fiction magazines, was discovered by the literati -- and they saw that his perceptive editing and nurturing and mentoring of certain writers had resulted in a genre that could rival respectable mainstream fiction, whatever that was.

There had always been science fiction writers who were more than penny-a-word hacks -- going back to St. Thomas More,  Edgar Allen Poe and H. G. Wells.  But now many science fiction writers, such as Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke, were perceived to  be artists.

I'm 29 and not only do I read science fiction, I'm one of those 'wacky' people who actually adopted a lifestyle based on the philosophies of a series of science fiction novels by John Norman (The Chronicles of Gor), I don't think there's any thing wrong with reading science fiction, no matter how old you are. Do what is best for you, and s***w the rest of the world.

Nothing wrong with it. I started when I was in high school hiding out in the library and am still reading SF today. It helps expand your mind into realms you've never thought of and like taking a ride on someone elses hidden highway(s).

That is great.   Books are there to learn from and enjoy.  The important thing is that you are reading.  What the heck, I'm 67 and you should see my collection of Nascar books.  Everything we want to learn is in books and in some cases, books take us where we want to be.  Thanks for asking........... I still read a lot of science fiction and I'm 54.

It's some of the best fiction on the planet, as far as I'm concerned.

My grandfather, former  professor of Latin literature in a top university, deadly serious, and sometimes extremely boring due to his old Austro hungarian education, at 96 reads science fiction and enjoys it
