My 240 volt kiln has a 4 conductor plug my service has 3 wires(red, black, and white).

Instructions: "The wall outlet must be 3-wire 115/240-208v, solid neutral supply. ... the 4th blade of the 4W30 grounding plug is for pure green-wire ground."

What is the proper connection for a new wall outlet?

  1. the 4W30 connection is correct, that is red, black, white and a bare conductor or green wire for the ground. If at your socket you may have only the three wires, pick up a ground by bonding to the water pipe, assuring that your water pipe is properly grounded. Or wire in a ground from the panel, which is best, however the water pipe will do. This will give you a true neutral and an isolated ground for short circuit protection.

    good luck!
