I seen this video on this Hydrogen powered car. Can a car run off of 100% hydrogen?

  1. Of course it can.

The trick is to obtain and store enough H2 to make it practical.

  2. No you'll need oxygen

and besides hydrogen is ultra light your car can't carry much of it

except for the solid hydrogen compounds which are very expensive and are still experimenting

  3. Like the other guy said, you need oxygen, or at least some kind of oxidizer.

Your car can only run on 100% hydrogen if it's a fusion reactor. Good luck powering a car with that.

  4. It takes more electricity to make hydrogen than it will produce with the generator. Hydrogen is the most explosive gas known why do u think NASA uses it for fuel. Be very careful.

Very interesting video! He is stealing some electric current from the alternator and battery to generate hydrogen, which he burns mixed with the gasoline. Despite some inherent inefficiencies in this process, it does improve his mileage.

As for 100% hydrogen powered cars, this would be an improvement on gasoline, but it is not the best alternative fuel option available.

Remember in the video, he used electricity to make the hydrogen? This is why hydrogen is not truly a fuel - it is an energy carrier, like a battery. Water plus energy (electricity) makes hydrogen, then when it is burned or used in a fuel cell, we get water and energy (electricity) back out. That's a reversible chemical process, exactly what happens inside a battery. All the energy comes from the electricity. No new energy is created. In fact, some is lost. The hydrogen process is, in fact, less efficient than just storing the same electricity in a battery.

A fuel cell car is, in fact, an electric car, with an added fuel cell and hydrogen tank. Take a look at this new electric car:

And tell me, why add a hydrogen tank to that?
