25 horse mercury outboard lower unit question.?

I have a 95model 25 merc outboard and was wondering if a foot off of a similar year model 25 but long shaft would interchange

  1. Should be no problem at all!

    As long as you have the spacer block that goes in between the lower end and the power head (engine) that came with the long shaft version.  The "longer" shaft lower end (propeller end) already had the right length longer drive shaft and shifter shaft and water tube...

    The only difference is the long shaft version has about a four to six inch (can't remember exact size) section that bolts inbetween the upper and lower sections together to make up the difference in length between a short shaft and long shaft version outboard versions.

    Basically, you unbolt one and bolt on the other, only takes about twenty min.'s to switch them out.


  2. Almost all outboards can be converted from short to long shaft. The main thing to look at are the midsection parts that you will need to make this change. Talk to your local merc dealer and get some part numbers so that you can match up what you will need from the older motor.

  3. No it won't fit. The drive shaft will be to short.
