25hp Mercury water pump servce-dropping the lower unit

Question

I have removed the 4 bolts and the lower unit dropped 1". It is being hung by the shifting rod. How is the rod disconnected to let the unit come off in order to replace the impeller etc..?

Under the carb, on the port side, you will see where the shift rod comes up through the midsection.  It is joined to the shift linkage by a cam clip.  Using a pair of long needlenose pliers, push the clip up off the lock pin, and pull it toward you.  Once removed, it is self evident how to re-install.  Don't forget to grease the shaft spline when installing the gearcase.
