26th FIBA Asia Championship 21 Sep Review: Iran and Jordan enter the quarterfinals: (Part-2)
Iran 79 – South Korea 62
Iran remained undefeated in the tournament after they beat South Korea 79-62 on Wednesday in Wuhan, China. Memphis Grizzlies star Hamed Haddadi netted 17 point and clutched 11 boards to lead Iran with yet another dominating performance.
South Korea, on the other hand, lost their first game in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship and they will now be facing Japan in the quarterfinals. South Korea’s starters managed to post a decent performance, however their efforts
couldn’t stop the Iranians.
Keyed by their starting five, Iran stormed onto the court and wrapped up a comprehensive 23-13 lead in the first 10 minutes. They maintained the advantage throughout the second quarter as well and didn’t let the opposition to gain
any sort of momentum. Going into halftime, Iran was leading the game by 12 points at 42-30.
The Iranians stretched their lead to 17 points right at the start of the third quarter however South Korea didn’t surrender and stepped up the intensity.
Jung-Suk Lee scored 8 points of his 14 in the last five minutes of the third period including two 3-pointers, helping the South Koreans bring down the deficit to 10 points as the game entered its final ten minutes.
However Korea failed to keep the momentum going in the last 10 minutes and scored only 11 points, handing Iran a comprehensive 79-62 win.
Jordan 94 – United Arab Emirates 80
On Wednesday night, team Jordan clinched the quarterfinal berth after registering a 94-80 win over United Arab Emirates. Jordan recorded an incredible offensive performance in the starting 10 minutes of the game, unleashing a 40
point foray, and after that they led throughout.
All of the Jordan’s starters landed double-figures on the night and with the win, they eliminated United Arab Emirates from the tournament. Osama Daghles led the Jordanians with 20 points and 9 assists.
Staring at 20 point lead after the first quarter, United Arab Emirates only managed to bring down the deficit by 1 point as the game progressed into the second half.
Even though, United Arab Emirates displayed better performance in the last two quarters, adding 42 points as compared to 37 points by Jordan, they never posed any real danger to the final outcome. Jordan will now meet the mighty
Iranians in the quarterfinal and they certainly have their work cut out.
