26th FIBA Asia Championship Roundup Day 3: Philippines rout Bahrain; China down UAE (Part-4)
Philippines 113 – Bahrain 71
On the third day of the action at the Asian Championship on Saturday, Philippines annihilated Bahrain and registered a comfortable 113-71 win. Japeth Aguilar was the highlight of the night with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, helping Philippines improve their record to 2-1 in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China.
Marcus Douthit of Philippines was one rebound short from posting a second double-double for the team. Douthit finished the game with an impressive 18 points, 9 boards and 2 assists.
From Bahrain, only three players Bader Abdulla Malabes, Hesham Sarhan and Mohamed Mari managed to land double-figures, a feat achieved by seven players from Philippines. Bader Abdulla was the top performer for Bahrain. He racked up 15 points and dished out 7 assists in the game.
The dominating Filipinos unloaded 30 points in the first quarter leaving the opposition 12 points behind. The second quarter of the game brought back slight hope for Bahrain when they managed to outscore Philippines 22-21.
Bahrain’s hope however turned out to be short lived as Philippines retorted tremendously in the third quarter and smashed the opposition with a 35-point blitz, taking the lead to 86-47. There was no way Bahrain could cut down the huge deficit in the final 10 minutes and Philippines romped to a comfortable 113-71 victory.
China 75 – United Arab Emirates 60
The host of the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship, China recorded their third straight victory in as many days after beating United Arab Emirates 75-60 win.
Zhang and Yue Sun teamed up to carry the momentum for the Chinese, scoring15 and 13 points respectively. Although there was no other notable performance from China, however every player played his part in pieces to help host remain unbeaten in the tournament.
United Arab Emirates’ Rashed Al Zaabi was the top performer of the night however, despite landing a game-high 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists; he failed to guide his team towards the victory.
The home team started off with 10-3 run in the preliminary minutes of the first quarter and continued to dominate, amplified their lead to 22-8 at the end of the first period.
Keyed by their superstar Rashed Al Zaabi, the visitors bounced back in the second quarter and managed to cut down the deficit by six points. However, the home team triggered another offensive assault in the third quarter and took the lead to 61-42, taking the game out of United Arab Emirates reach.
