2nd Ashes Test, Adelaide - Day 1: Australia's worst start in 60 years
Australian captain, Ricky Ponting won the toss and decided to bat on apparently a good batting pitch at Adelaide. The start to the innings was horrific and it seemed as if Ponting had made the wrong decision.
Australia suffered their worst start in over 60 years. Simon Katich was run out in the first over without troubling the scorers. He hadn’t even faced a single delivery before Trott ran him out. Ricky Ponting came in at number 3 and disappointed the jam-packed
Adelaide crowd. He was dismissed on the first delivery he faced by an on-song Jimmy Anderson.
In the 3rd over, things went from bad to worse. Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 continued on his disastrous form as Anderson snared yet another wicket. Swann took his 2nd catch at second slip and Australia were 3 down for only 2 runs. This was reminiscent
of the start Australia made against England in 1950 at Brisbane when they were 3 down without getting a single run on the board.
The English fans were coca-hoop, England were on top but in came Michael Hussey to the crease. He is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s man for the crisis as he showed in the previous Test match, scoring a remarkable 195 in Brisbane. Much relied on “Mr Cricket”, a nickname given
to Hussey.
Hussey combined with Shane Watson to steady the ship. The scoring rate was slower than usual as the Aussie batsmen were struggling against the immaculate Anderson.
However, the determined pair managed to scrape past the hostile early spell. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 reached another half century and maintained his good form for the year 2010. Hussey made a solid 36 before the 1st session ended at 94-3. After the horrific beginning to
the innings, the session ended with at least a respectable total on the board.
2 sessions are still remaining in the day’s play. England need to dismiss Hussey if they are to take a stronger grip on the match. The 1st session has promised an intriguing day’s play.
