Hi - I have a 2nd grader who is having trouble with reading/writting. Does any one have any suggestions for activities we can do over the summer? Or anyone know of a good activity book?

Thanks

  1. Are you familiar with the Summer Bridge series?  They are excellent resources for families!  Children keep their brain cells active all summer and the activities are interesting and sometimes challenging.

I'd also recommend making a few file folder games.  You can search these on line.  And don't over look the library.  There are many resources for reading literacy there, look in the home school section.  I like a book---Thinking Games to Play with Your Child (Cheryl Tuttle)---it has nothing but games to play with your kids.

Utilize on line games, like Star Fall and look up favorite authors, like Jan Brett.

    HTH!

  2. My first suggestion would be to read Dr. Raymond Moore's book, "Better Late than Early." In it he discusses sound scientific evidence why asking kids to read, write and do formal math before their brains are ready, actually contributes to learning disorders. Dr. Moore was a pioneer in the homeschooling movement and his work is highly respected.

Reading aloud and listening to books on tape are a good way to get a child's ear familiar with words and the cadence of language. This helps them "hear" words in their head as they are reading and to put them into context, which is a big help when sounding out and comprehending unfamiliar words.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about writing yet. I know it feels really hard to let a 7 or 8 year old NOT write because we've got it stuck in our heads that just because a school system says all 7 years olds should write, then ours should too. You know what's best for your child, listen to your heart.

  3. I had the same exact problem as you this year...We had tried everything and nothing seemed to help, so some might think I am crazy but this is what we done this year and will do with each of our other kids as well.

First off for Kyle(7) we found that enforcing a spelling list every week helped him HUGELY!

I recommend scholastic week by week grade___ it is great we found it last year and decided I would try anything, they do something small everyday of the week takes about 5 minutes each and with that little nudge everyday, it worked.

    Also we found Starfall...www.starfall.com

Absolutely wonderful, the site is free, but you can purchase the books and a journal to complete, I recommend doing so,

These 2 things in-proved Kyles reading to exactly where he needed to be, I couldn't think of anything more important than making sure he had a firm foundation  of reading.

**I hope this helps you like it did us.
