2nd grader having trouble?

Question

My 2nd grader is having trouble with spelling words, does anyone have ideas or tricks that worked with their kids?? She come from a special ed class and they apparently only showed them how to spell phonetically and she is struggling. I need ideas please.

Teach them that there's two different ways to spell out words.  Like eating ice cream, so far they know how to eat it from a dish and spoon, but do they know how to eat it from a cone??? (it's a metaphor...) If they know the alphabet, let them tell you what each letter is, and then teach them that, that is how to spell.
