2nd hard drive slave detection problem?

Question

I have 2 maxtors, 80GB and 160GB, They are identical models(ATA133).When I boot up a screen shows as all failing. I can put either one in and they work but not together, Even if I put one hard drive as 2nd master slave it won't boot. Is there a detailed guide on this?

MY XP SYSTEM CRASHED.. TRYING TO SLAVE IT TO WINDOWS ME BUT IT DOESN'T SHOW UP...DOES SHOW IN BIOS AS SLAVE. RUN ADD NEW HARD WARE...SAYS NONE FOUND. HELP!! NEED TO RECOVER MY DATA
