2x4"s or 2x6"s?

Question

im framing my basement and i wanna know which is better to use? 2x4's or 2x6's. is it just as easy to put insulation in 2x6 walls?

2x4's are standard. There's no reason to use 2x6's unless you're worried about load bearing walls, but even then you should be fine.

Insulation (R13 for walls) will compress to 2x4 thickness with no problem.

Also, don't forget about a moisture barrier. It's a "must" in a basement remodel.

If you have a warm basement use 2x4 if its cold use 2x6 this will allow you to increase the R factor of the insulation.

Are you doing a build out of an existing basement or is this new construction?? if it is just a build out, and nuthing is going to be supporting the above stories then 2X4 would be the stud of choice for me LOL. not only will you gain 3-1/2 inches of floor you will find that it will be alot easier to use the studs and erect the sills and headers. as far as the insulation its the same just unroll and staple

if your simply framing in a basement for finishing purposes, 2x4's or more than sufficient and it wouldn't be worth the extra expense to go bigger. if your framing a house from the ground up, 2x6's would be the best choice but not required unless you were building 2 storys on top.

The only differance between 2x4 and 2x6 walls will be the cost. yes 2x6 will give you a higher R value and the installation process is the same.
