metrics is all base 10 math.  

ie 10 mm = 1 cm

10cm = 1 decameter (but no one talks about those)

10 dm = 1 meter

the math is easy, every meter is equal to 1000 mm, or 100 cm, or 10 dm.

centi = 100's, so 3.4 meters is 340 cm's, or 3400mm, (or just to confuse things, 34 dm's)

Yo dude, "so easy, no trick" is rude!!!  When you are first learning it can be difficult.

The hint should really be 100 cm =1 m.  Divide one side by the other so you can cancel out one unit and have the ending unit.

3.4 m (100 cm/1m)=340 cm

wow i just read some other answers and let me tell ya, they are not thought out at all

just remember K H D U D C M (k=kilo h=hecto 1st d=deca u=unit 2nd d=deci c=centi m=milli, just move the decimal 1 untill u get to the right place) for example 4.65 metters ='s how many kilometers? .00465 kilometers, becuse u had to move the decimal over 3 times.
