3-4 week old baby parakeet, does the food HAVE to be warm? Am I doing enough?

I've kept parakeets before but never one this young, so I'm a little bit worried. My boyfriend brought home a baby parakeet that looks like it's 3-4 weeks old. Almost all the colored wing feathers are in but there are still some pin feathers around his face, on his stomach, and under his wings. The guy who sold the bird said to pour some "warm, but not too hot or too cold" water over this food (which looks like little yellow seeds) for the bird to eat. The bird eats out of a little dish by himself but also likes to be fed with a "spoon" made from a straw. The food is warm when I give it to him but of course it cools down quickly and he'll eat it even if it's cold. Is that okay? Also, his droppings are a lot wetter and looser than I remember normal adult parakeet droppings being, is it just because he's a baby or because of the moist food? Can I start giving him fresh vegetables, like sprouts, yet?

  1. YOU ALLWAYS WARM FOOD. OR HE WILL HAVE SOUR CROP.KEEP HALF OF CAGE ON TOP OF HEATING PAD. SPOON-FEED EVERY 5 HOURS. AT 5 WEEKS OLD PUT WET PELLETS AND A BRANCH OF MELLET AND APPLES.  WHEN HE EATS SOLIDE FOOD HIS p**p WILL NOT BE LIQUIDE.THE FOOD COULD BE TO LIQUIDE. I HOPE IT IS A HAND-FEEDING FORMULA! AND LOVE HIM CUZ YOUR HIS MOMMIE NOW. HE WILL BE THE BEST BIRD YOU WILL EVER HAVE!! HAVE FUN!!!

  2. If this bird is that young they still need to be hand feed with baby bird food they mite eat some seeds but you need to be feeding him with a syringe and baby bird food not hot water over seeds contact a vet asap and make sure you get him checked to see how old he is and what you should do. I also will say there is a web site that mite help you better www.birdboard.com try there and call a vet so they can help you or you mite have one sick baby on your hands if there is not a problem already!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Hmm.. a bird shouldn't be sold unweaned unless its going to a professional.

His food should be warm, but its not a huge deal. Just he is used to it. Umm the average age when a budgie is weaned is about 4-6 weeks old. Now your bird sounds like three weeks. Also the diet he is on is not appropriate. The person who sold him to your boyfriend was unprofessional and just trying to make profit not actually caring for the bird itself. Because you can't simply just switch the birds diet or this will cause 'hiccups'. Also hand feeding baby birds is very time consuming, I'm not sure but I think about every 4 hours you have to feed him, double check though. What you really need to do is go into the yellow pages and look up an avian vet, under vets, you should find a few. Call some and get their opinions on how you can introduce an actual baby bird formula into his diet without causing hiccups. An avian vet will know all the answers so ask everything you need to know.

    Good luck! Hope I've helped.
