Question:

3 & A Half Year Old With "Slap Cheek" - Holiday?

My 3 and a half year old son has had "slap cheek" for nearly a week, the rash is subsiding on his face but is spreading to his arms and legs. I have been giving him ibuprofen and using calamine lotion to soothe (although it doesn't seem to be bothering him)

My problem is, he is supposed to be going abroad on holiday a week from Saturday....does anyone have any experience with this? Will his "slap cheek" have cleared up by then? Will the sun bring it back out?

Thanks in advance

  2. Hi! I used to siffer with slap-cheek all the time as a child - what a nightmare!!

Ibuprofen and calamine lotion should help the symptoms although the rash can take between 1-3 weeks to clear and, during this time, it may appear to fade or get worse. It may also recur some time later if you have had increased exposure to sunlight or heat.

Mine used to disappear rather suddenly after a week or so...but it may not so afraid may just be a waiting game.

Id suggest keeping him out of direct sunlight if you do travel, and keeping him cool as much as possible!
