Question:

3 Broken Engagement Rings?

I got engaged in April this year & my fiance proposed to me with a 9ct white gold ring.

This one snapped 6 weeks later at the bottom of the ring where the resizing was done, was inspected by a jeweler & was considered faulty.

6 weeks after getting a replacement of the same ring, that snapped also.

My fiance & I had enough, got our money back & went else where to buy a new ring.

I got a new ring 11 days ago, this is an 18k white gold ring with a platinum coating... & today i noticed this one has also snapped!

=(

This one is double the gold carat & cost 6 times the price as the one before & still snapped.

I never wore it to work, took it off when I showered, took it off when I cleaned etc. & was always extra careful & gentle & when it came off it went back into it's original box for safe keeping.

My mothers engagement & wedding bands are also 18k white gold, 27 years old & still perfect & she NEVER takes them off, not for anything.

So, how can 3 different rings break like that in the same spot in such a small amount of time?

What causes white gold to snap like that?

How could it snap?

Is 18ct supposed to more durable than 9ct?

Anything you can tell me will be great.

Sorry, this is so long...

  1. like the other person..

..is this a sign that you two shouldnt be getting married??

    eeek

sorry for saying that---but thats weird to me!

  2. I'm left thinking that even though the third ring was purchased somewhere different than the first two - maybe the place where they do the resizing is the same - and that's where the problem is. The place where they are either making the ring smaller or larger is the problem.

I suggest you really look hard to find a ring in your size specifically, so no sizing needs to be done in the ring.  Or if that's not possible at all, ensure that the place which does the resizing is absolutely not the one which did the first three.

Don't get superstitious on this. While it's odd to have such a very long engagement, you still deserve to have a ring.

  3. I am positive that 9ct gold is more durable that 18ct as I had this discussion with my jeweller and opted for 9ct engagement ring and wedding band. I don't know what would cause it to snap. You're having bad luck though. Maybe its an omen? I'm not superstitious either but thats just weird. BTW the reason 9ct gold is more durable is because the 18ct is a softer gold. This is what I was told anyway.

  4. Maybe the fact that you keep taking it off has something to do with it.

If the fit is good the ring is slightly smaller than your knuckle and is hard to get over that point (if not it would fall off at every point). By taking it off you put stress on it every time pushing against the edge. This stress is repeated very often (for work for shower etc) hence it snaps. the fact that you never take it off actually means that you are more gentle with it. What you perceive as careful is for the ring actually really stressful.

White gold of all golds is the most soft as the colouration in the ring is by adding less precious materials (copper for yellow gold and rhodium for red gold) and then 18ct makes it really quite soft and then the stress is really high you are putting onto it.

  5. Ive never heard of 9ct gold. But the higher the number, the softer the gold is. Thats why most jewelry is 18ct, not 24ct (which is pure gold). The lower the number, the higher the presence of the alloy metal (usually copper) to make it stronger. So I would guess that your 9ct had a high presence of the alloy metal. This is just a guess, but keep in mind that the metals are joining and becoming stronger when you add the alloy. Maybe gold only needs a little alloy to become strong, but maybe it doesnt work the other way around (a lot of alloy, a little gold).?

Ive never heard of gold dipped in platinum, but that doesnt sound like a good combination to me. Each metal has its own properties and reacts differently to heat, cooling, bumps, etc. so I dont know why you would want two different metals stuck together. Im not surprised this one broke.

Your engagement is not jinxed! Get a good quality band and dont cut corners.

  6. perhaps you should go to a jeweler and talk with him or her.  In my case, my daddy knows a jeweler and I went to her.  she is an old family friend.  Perhaps you can do the same thiing.  Can your daddy advise you?

  7. I soo shouldn't even say this probably, but that would creep me out and make me wonder if i was really supposed to be getting married right now.

  8. 18ct is softer than 9ct..I've never seen a 9ct gold band.I know they come in 10,14,18,etc.,but never heard of a 9,but then I have not been out looking for quite some time.
