3 Jelly Hollendorfer’s fillies, Open Mind, Safely Kept, Sky Beauty, make it to the Hall of Fame inductees
The Hall of Fame’s Historic Review Committee met this year to consider trainers, jockeys and horses whose careers ended more than twenty five years ago. The three time Kentucky Oaks winner, Hollendorfer, has three of his fillies, Open Mind, Safely Kept and
Sky Beauty, inducted in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame.
Jerry Hollendorfer trained the three fillies. Hollendorfer commented on this in a teleconference, saying, “It’s something you can never expect in life to be put in the Hall of Fame, so I’m quite humbled and very grateful to have been placed there along with
a lot of other great people, And I’m honored to be on the phone with Mr. (Allen) Jerkens, who is already in the Hall of Fame".
This honour was bestowed upon him on Friday, May 13.
Edward L. Bowen is the chairman of the Hall of Fame nominating committee. The 16 member nominating committee had 80 candidates before finalizing a list of 10.
The 10 finalists that got selected received the highest number of votes from 183 voters in the United States and Canada.
Hollendorfer was elected in the contemporary category by the 183 member voting panel. The Hall of Fame’s Historic Review Committee will announce its selections in early June to complete the Class of 2011.
The class will be inducted on August 12 at 10:30a.m. at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Hollendorfer has emerged as one of the most successful trainers in Northern California. He has won every major training championship held at the Bay Area, from 1986 to 2008.
Hollendorfer is known for his unwavering work ethic and has recorded 37 straight titles at Bay Meadows and 32 consecutive crowns at Golden Gate Fields. The Southern Californian circuit also bestowed the trainer with considerable success and the 64-year-old
won a training title at the Arlington Park as well.
Even in 2010 Hollendorfer won five Grade 1 races which include the Kentucky Oaks, Alabama and Las Virgenes with Blind Luck, the Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile with Dakota Phone, and the Gamely with Tuscan Evening.
His other major wins include Santa Anita Handicap, Delaware Handicap, Hollywood Futurity and Haskell Invitational. He has ranked in the Top 10 for 24 consecutive years.
Hollendorfer also ranked fourth in total earnings. His earnings are a total of $9,307,328.
The trainer ranks third in all time victories, led by Jack Van Berg and King Leatherbury. In the North American training community, he is ranked eighth in all time earnings.
Hollendorfer wanted to thank his wife, Janet, and paid tribute to her, saying, “She’s been the glue that’s held the stable together for all these years”. He said, “She’s the catalyst that makes everything go and I give her a lot of the credit for everything
we’ve accomplished”.
Hollendorfer was born on June 18, 1946. The trainer is childless.
