Answer what you can.

1. I visited Erfurt in May and August 2007, and on one of the churches in the Domplatz they had a bunch of scaffolding around it. Will that still be there in January 2008?

2. Is Magdeburg worth a stop?

3. What sea should I visit? The Baltic or the North. To me the Baltic looks less discovered, and more interesting.

  1. Magdeburg has a very nice shopping outlet.  There's not much else there but if you like shopping I recommend it. (It's back behind McDonalds) off the freeway.

  2. number one, i highly doubt that, they only do that on specail occassions. i am from Germany so i know. number 2, yes it sure is. a very pretty city.

    number 3, i have been to both and both are worth seeing. the north is always a bit chilly , jnot like freezing, welld epends on when u gt if u go summer time, dont be expecting to be able to jump into the sea, and the baltic is about the same. enjoy

  3. 1. Reconstruction works on churches mostly take a few years, so there's chances that the scaffolding will still be there, or will be there again.

    2. Not that I knew.

    3. Neither of them. It's just cold and wet up there, and you'll have sea, sand, wind, and heavy rain on the coast. What do you do there? Visit some bigger city on one of the big rivers like the Rhine or the Danube (Rhein, Donau) instead, deeper down south. You'll have more cultural events there and don't get so wet. Besides, the weather is likely to be warmer.

    @pinata,

    where in my post did I talk about Munich?

  4. Alwin is not wrigth. Normally it is in the north in winter warmer than in the south of Germany cause of the nearer sea. But of course it is no time to have beach holyday. Here we have so between 41°F and 14°F very seldomn snow, no mostly the weather is misty. There is another thing you must mention in the beginnig of January the day will be from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. No North Germany is not the Careabean in winter in spite of that there are a lot people comming to the North especially the North Sea for recration if it is cold the beachparties are hot. And there is the culinary aspect best German dishes are very caloric and therefore winter is the time they are served. In your place I would make a sightseeing tour Bremen - Hamburg - Lübeck - Eutin - Plön - Eckernförde - Schleswig - Kappeln - Glücksburg - Niebüll ( Nolde Museum) - (perhaps Sylt very expensive all the year Jet Set resort.) - Husum - instead of Sylt better St. Peter-Ording - Friedrichstadt - Glückstadt -Hamburg - Ülzen - Celle - Hannover. And that was it . Take an Interail ticket, and the place you like you stay - where not you go to the next. Except Hamburg, Hannover and Lübeck you will not have problems with a cheap night stay.

    If you come next time you should have a look on the Deutsche Märchenstraße ( German fairytale street) that is on the upper Weser. But there you should walk, and therefore you should come in May or late August.

    Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

    Heinz

    ps: We have here seldom snow, but when we have, we have a lot.

    @Alwin: Hamburg has more sunshine hours a year than Munich.

  5. Definatly visit the Baltic sea I spent many a happy day picking seaweed out of my mouth after a hard days swimminjg in the beach
