the pollution caused by not recycling is damaging our environment so fast that in the next 50 years, typhoons like katrina would happen more often.

Recycling is not the green solution it is cracked up to be. Why do you think the local governments have taken over the recycling effort? They make money and create make-work jobs, and raise taxes to do it! Consider:

1.) In the United States the vast majority of paper is manufactured from trees grown on tree farms that were created specifically for making paper. In fact, because of the great need for paper, these tree farms have caused an at least 3-fold increase in the tree population since 1920.

2.) More energy is spent in collecting, sorting, and processing in recycling than just making things from scratch. Some estimates show that it costs about three times as much to recycle one ton of garbage than to just dump it in a landfill.

3.) Land fill capacities, like blast furnace capacities, have increased incredibly over the years. Because of this, the number of land fills needed to satisfy our needs has decreased, but the overall land fill capacity in the U.S. has increased.

i feel that everyone should recycle everything that's recyclable or re-usable because:

   1)you've just saved valuable time and energy in making that same item,

   2) someone else can use that item, and they won't have to spend time or $ in getting it, and

   3) you've connected with another person in helping them, sharing what you no longer need w/them, showing them that you care enough to recycle.

On a very personal level -

Keeps local taxes down (no need to increase taxes for collection and landfill)

Keeps personal costs down (you are less likely to buy excessively wrapped products which are almost always more expensive than less excessively wrapped products, once you know both how much the wrapping is costing you and how much of what you pay for you are tossing before you use the product)

Actually earns a bit of income - aluminum, steel, glass, paper, and plastic are marketable, and most commercial recycle centers pay for them.  Even "scrap yards" will pay for aluminum and steel.
