  1. Kid, do your homework yourself.

  2. That’s because “The Hobbit” is not an allegory and there are no real symbols in the story. Tolkien has stated that he disliked allegory. That doesn’t stop stupid people from wrongly interpreting his works as allegories.

Apparently one of these stupid people is your teacher, or the writer of a series of questions that you must answer. So just say that Smaug is a symbol of greed, and quote “His rage passes description – the sort of rage that is only seen when rich folk that have more than  the can enjoy suddenly lose something that they have long had but they have never before used or wanted.” That will probably fool someone who wants to be fooled.

Try the “stone giants'' as a second symbol. They do seem to be possibly just symbols of the storm.

A third symbol might be hobbits, who symbolise dull and conventional people. See the description near the beginning of the book. Those hobbits who are more interesting are declared to be “not entirely hobbitlike”.

This is all nonsense of course, it it is likely to please your teacher. Remember your job is to give your teacher whatever c**p he or she wants, not to tell the truth. And your teacher is trying to remove any ability you have to appreciate literature for what it is. Once you realize that, you can play the game, and realize it’s just a stupid game.
