my cat has had kittens, she had 3, one is missing, I havent been in alll day so not sure how long its been missing.

I have searched the house and cannot find it, in her box is the 2 which she feeds, so if she hid it, wouldnt she of moved the others?

I have a cat flap and sometimes a cat comes in, would they of took it? I have another cat which is her mum and she scares cats out so would they of had time?

any ideas?

  1. She could have eaten the kitten, but the older it is, the less likely that is to happen. It usually happens when the mother is very nervous. She could eat it and you wouldn't find much blood.

What is more likely is that the kitten wandered off or the mother started to move her babies and took one somewhere and then the cries of the remaining kittens called her back to them. She might have left the one and not moved the others. I had a female do that a couple of times, only she left the babies right in the middle of the floor, so I didn't have any trouble finding them.

An abandoned kitten will usually cry--although perhaps not too loudly--but since you were out all day, it may have cried itself out. The suggestion to take the mother around the house and see if she finds it is good, and you yourself should try searching again. Places like inside lazyboy chairs (could be entered from the flap on the back), underneath furniture, and behind things in narrow spaces. Do you have any built-in kitchen cupboards with doors controlled by springs that a cat could open, but then they would close themselves? Have you searched in all your shoes and in clothes closets behind the clothes you have hanging up there? Don't neglect to look up higher, too, because the mother could jump up somewhere. She is most likely to have chosen a dark, secluded space.

There is also a slight possibility that the mother planned to move the kittens to some location outside, so I would go around your house outside and look a bit there, too. Any sheds she could have liked?

If the mother isn't a first-time mother and wasn't acting nervous, it is most likely that the kitten is hidden away somewhere and hasn't been eaten. While I suppose the scenario of another cat coming in and taking the kitten is not beyond the realm of possibility, I think it is very unlikely. Sometimes a male will kill kittens, ensuring that other cats' genes have less chance than his own do of being passed on, but I don't think he would just carry one off.

Unless your home is very warm, there isn't any time to be lost in finding the baby, and even from the point of view of feeding, after several hours it becomes an urgent matter. Sorry to cause you more worry. I am sure you are doing the best you can. If you find the kitten, warm it up as soon as possible.

  2. im afraid i cant think of an explanation other than a cat took it

  3. Has the mother eaten it?

  4. it cant have gotten far since there so young and they cant hardly move let alone run just check beneath any carpet or rugs cuz they can wedge in there and suffocate.
