  1. Don't presume that everyone speaks  English, wants dollars and that all of them like America.

When in Italy do try to speak some Italian. Do be polite. Do dress better than you would back home.

  2. DO:

Try to speak at least a little of the language - people appreciate the attempt even though their English is probably better than our Italian.

Greet the people in stores when you go in and leave

Pay attention to local customs - in most (but not all) places you pay for coffee, brioche, etc at the cashier and take the receipt to the people serving

    DON'T:

Touch the fruit & vegetables in the market stalls - wait for the owner to pick it out for you

Get on a train without a validated ticket - the fines start at 50 euro

Order capuccino after 11 am - it's considered a morning drink

  3. i'm italian...

    - do smile all the time, no matter where, when and who with! :D

    - do eat our food!

    - do enjoy your trip! which is the most important thing!

    - don't be rude to anyone

    - don't think South is better than North or vice versa, cause italy is all attractive!

    - don't be american, but try as you can to settle down with our people, habits, daily life.... this is worthing.

  4. 3 Do's:

Do eat the food in Italy.

Do meet new people in Italy.

    Do go to Southern Italy.

    3 Dont's:

Dont tell Italians you are American.

Dont walk around with money in your hand.

Dont go to Northern Italy. (Its boring)

  5. Hello,

    Do-

1- make the proper greeting to everyone when you enter or leave a store, cab or bus.  They will greet you and it would be rude if you don't return the greeting.

2- Sample the varieties of food that are offered.  Don't just stick with the "pasta".  Italy has many wonderful dishes that change from region to region.  You should sample as many as you can.  And don't forget the gelato!  The best in the world!

3-  Visit as many historical sites as you can.  This country IS history.  It is everywhere.  Go explore ruins, visit churches and museums, walk down streets that are hundreds (if not thousands) of years old.  Enjoy this country.

    Don't-

1-  carry money or anything valuable in your pockets or a backpack.  Italy has a lot of petty theft, the most prominent is pick pockets.  Use a money belt that goes inside your clothes.

2- come to Italy for 6 days and expect to see 6 different cities and enjoy them.  Italy should be savored.  Take your time to explore each city.  Slow to the Italian pace.

3-  wear short with sandals and socks!   This screams tourist.  Dress nicely.  All Italians dress nicely.

  6. Do:

    1. buy your bus tickets at the tabaccaio before boarding a bus

    2. greet buongiorno or buonasera when you enter a shop, or ciao as you leave a restaurant

    3. dress well or suitably for all occasions

    Don't:

    1. leave your bags in the car

    2. discuss your views about communism

    3. expect alitalia and airport staff to be polite
