Here's the current point guards that wear 3. I  think more great shooting guards have worn 3 than point guards in history, but it does seem a lot of point and shooting guards are wearing 3 a lot more now.

Not at all. But no.3 seems to me they are players favorite number. Remember when Penny Hardaway was an elite player of the league all players that went in after the draft wanted the no. 1 jersey. Single digit numbers have been popular since Bill Russell's days even the great man wore single digit by wearing no. 6. No. 23 seems to be a rarity with players as they shy away from being compared to the Air-man by wearing the number.
