Why does Winston believe that the future lies in the hands of the proles?

What is the meaning of Winston's journal entry, "Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious?"

Do you think the proles will ever rebel? Why or why not?

  1. 1. because the proles are the majority, and if they chose to overthrow the government, they could

    2. it means that the proles need to become conscious of the fact that they are being repressed in order to do something about it, but they are being kept ignorant and uneducated so they cannot know they are being repressed until the government is overthrown

    3. this is supposed to be your opinion, but here's what i think: you have to keep in mind that George Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning of what could happen if we lost to somebody like Stalin. it is not just a story where the hero solves the problem and everybody lives happily ever after. so no, the proles will never rebel, because that is the point. Orwell was saying that if we let somebody like that win, then we will end up in that kind of world, with no hope

  2. I have not read the book, but here are a couple of links that may help you.

  3. 1)  Because they are the labor force and without them their entire world is in chaos.

    2)  The proles are too oppressed to rise up against their society, so they will never be able to revolt.

    3)  This is your opinion, but I don't think they would because they are so uneducated.

    Good luck.
