Any suggestions on a 3 million volt capacitor? the smallest i can make or buy is needed.?

Using Boiled oil should prevent the spark, but only upto a few 100k volts i know. Im working on a "At home Fusion reactor". Im going to try a 3 unit design each one feesing off the other, allowing pulsed energy as input instead of direct energy, also I was hoping to get them to balance each other out. But I here the voltage output can be as high as 3+million volts.

  1. Oh that wacky Doc Brown. Hit your head on another toilet seat, did you?

  2. Wrong plan. Build a capacitor bank using "normal" off-the-shelf components, and step the voltage up using a transformer.

  3. Same answer as before.

Anything much above 500 kV is impossible, as that voltage will flash over between the electrodes.

Breakdown in air is about 33 kV/cm. At 1 million volts, you need air gaps of 30 cm. At 3 million volts, you need air gaps of 100 cm.

Try building a capacitor where the wires and the plates are 100 cm apart. Not just from each other, but also from everything else.

take a look at the videos here:

Some spectacular arcs, and this is only 500kV

  4. You're not going to find a capacitor with 3MV dielectric as a COTS item.

Dry air has a dielectric strength of 3MV/m

Teflon is pretty good: 5 cm would give you 3MV separation

Trouble with this problem is you're going to need a LOT of space.  Like a warehouse just to build a capacitor of any size.

    Fusion reactor, huh?

  5. I don't believe this is possible with oil, etc. You need to consider using a Faraday cage to be able to hold that high a potential without accidental discharge which, in this case, would be disastrous and fatal if you came into contact.

Another possibility for a dielectric is a vacuum. Without air there can be no ionization, therefore no spark even though there might be a glow. What amount of current are you drawing?

  6. Same answer as for your billion volt capacitor question.  Not practical.  Shouldn't you be updating your Myspace profile?
