Brief: 21, male, 217, 6'2. High alcohol tolerance, experience w/ hard liquors. Never tried gin before. Drank gin June 6th, got a bit short of breath, stopped. Woke up June 7th to a constant cough/tickling sensation in the pit of the throat between the collar bones (the suprasternal fossa, this area http://darlingclinic.com/vault/massage/asthma_cv22_clip_image002.gif).

Many doctors visited, EKG, chest x-ray, barium swallow, endoscopy. A trial of psychological meds, a trial of antibiotics, a trial of antacids/PPI's (they suspected reflux since they found a very very small 3-4 cm sliding hiatal hernia). Nothing has worked.

Cough drops don't work, it is constant. Doesn't come with meals, doesn't go on an empty stomach, pretty constant.

Got checked for pulmonary problems at a pulmonologists office (flow meter/spirometer test). Allergies were ruled out after an immunoglobin test and a trial of Clarinex.

I also get a strange odor coming from my mouth, and I've had everyone smell it, including my acupuncturist, they can't smell anything.

Can't be totally psychological since it just popped up after drinking gin. I've ceased all alcohol.

The cough is pretty intense, and varies throughout the day randomly. I cough sometimes, but it's usually like the feeling you get when you're about to initiate a cough, but it doesn't initiate, it's a constant nuisance.

Any advice would help

  1. Gargle with vinegar and water.

Then, separately gargle with salt in water.

(You got gin or some food while drinking gin in your tonsils, sounds like)

Anyway, not a doc, or anything, but that's my guess. (Sensations are trained in our mind, so we know where we feel something. Although it may feel like it is deeper in your throat, it could just be your tonsils.)

  2. Could be a yeast infection, especially with the odor you described.  I would have a visit with the allergist again.  If not yeast infection, then some other mold or allergic reaction to something in the environment. Best of luck to you in finding an answer and some relief.......
