Question:

3 month old - weird sleeping habits?

My 3 month old baby girl is having trouble sleeping through the night (I think). For the past 2-3 weeks, she has her bottle (8oz) at 9/10pm.. she then goes to bed in her crib and sleeps anywhere from 4am-7am. When she wakes up, I bring her into bed with me and she will continue sleeping until around 9am - provided I keep sticking her soother in her mouth every 30 mins/1hr or so.. it's not consistent at all! During the day she has 4 bottles - every 4 hrs and 8 oz... I know that bringing her into the bed with me is not a good habit to get into so I'm wondering what I should do. I wonder if I should be giving her a bottle when she wakes up, but the last two nights she woke up at 4am (on Sunday AM) and then this morning she only lasted in her crib until 1am!! She DID just have a change in formula, recommended by her pediatrician so I'm wondering if that's it? I don't know what to do.. any suggestions?!?! Other than her weird sleeping habit at night, she is a great baby and has 2 long naps during the day..

  1. I don't think those are weird sleeping habits.  My son is also 3 months and sleeps from 10-11pm until around 4-5am.  I give him a bottle (sometimes he'll only eat 2oz) and he usually falls right back to sleep.  Then will wake again between 7-9am and is up for the morning.

  2. My baby has been sleeping through the night (8-9 hours) since he was 2 months old.  His doctor said this was fine.  I created a routine. Bath at the same time every night, then bottle. I would give him maybe 2 more ounces than normal for his last bottle, or his last two bottles for the night closer together to supplement for not eating throughout the night.  I  wouldn't force her to stay sleep, and I would not bring her in the bed with me. But if she wakes during the night, chances are if you give her a bottle, she will go back to sleep when she finishes.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Yes, unfortunately I think that is considered "sleeping through the night".  My 3 month old sleeps from 9 or 10 to 4:30 and then from 4:30 to 8:00.  Of course I'm tired of waking up during the night, but I know I'm lucky  that he only wakes up the one time.  And he will not sleep for more than 30 minutes during the day.

  4. Your baby IS 'sleeping through the night.' 8-10 hours is amazing for this age.  If she wakes between 5 and 7, she's awake, and it's morning. You can't force her to sleep an extra couple of hours just because YOU prefer to sleep until 9.

(And if she woke at 1 last night .. probably a growth spurt. Feed her when she's hungry.)
