The 2010-11 English Premier League season has by far been the most closely contested one, with almost half of the season gone and still 3 realistic title challengers existing. Chelsea did start the season with a bang and knocked in bag full of goals, while
Manchester United looked to be in 2nd gear for a while and took some time to get going. The initial form of Chelsea eventually ran out and Manchester United has managed to yet again get on top of the table. Arsenal meanwhile has kept up the chase
too. The gunners are now in 3rd place and still have a realistic chance of winning the title. Even though the gunners have not won any silverware let alone the Premier League in last 5 seasons, the current talent in the squad and the manager, Arsene
Wenger, still has what it takes to go all the way.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, is certainly someone who believes that the title race is open for all 3 contenders. Ferguson said that he does not think that anyone outside these 3 teams has a chance to win the title. He was indirectly
undermining the so called pretenders of the crown ‘Manchester City’. The city rivals of Manchester United who spend 180 million pounds in the summer transfer window to finally win some silver and also register themselves as one of the big teams in the league.
Ferguson’s team is currently on top of the table and are leading by 2 points, with 2 games still in hand. One of which is against Blackpool and the other big one against Chelsea, both of which were called off due to bad weather.
After the next round of matches, United may be able to extend their lead even further if they are able to beat Sunderland on Boxing Day. Arsenal and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 meanwhile do battle on Monday and a draw would suit the Red Devils best.
Sir Alex while extending his comments about who is to win the title, went on to say that he has no doubt that teams like Manchester City and Tottenham would eventually fade away as the season progresses.
The United manager believes that Spurs and City are not used to being committed in Europe and also being an integral part of the Premier League, so it will eventually take a toll on their limited squad and will hamper them in the long run.
Before the season started, it was said that with the amount of money spent by City and some good signings made by Spurs, it would be a much more open season. Observing the progress of the tournament, those claims have not been proven wring so far. Right
now there are only 3 points between the top 4 sides in the league, but, as mentioned, United do have games in hand.
Surprisingly, the defending Champions, Chelsea, are lying in 4th place but all that can change if they can get a good result against Arsenal on Monday.
As Manchester United take on Sunderland on Sunday, and Arsenal and Chelsea go head to head on Monday, Manchester City take on Newcastle and would be looking to make some headway in the title race which they strongly believe they are a part of. It is bound
to be an interesting week as fortunes could certainly change when the dust settles on Tuesday, and there would hardly be time to breathe as the busy Christmas season will throw up 3 more match-days in next 10 days.
