My rabbit has recently given birth to 8 rabbits. Up until yesterday I left them in the shed in which they were born but have now moved then into a hutch, still with mum. This morning all were fine apart from 1, who seemed very weak. I warmed him up a bit and then encouraged him to feed but died. I am now worried about anonther baby bunny who looks sleepy when all the others are leaping around like fools. What happened to the baby?

  1. possibly was just the runt of the litter and wouldn't have survived anyway. could have had a weak immune system and just died of a cold or something. If you don't want the others to die try keeping them warm and making sure they eat as far as i'm aware that is all you can do!

    sorry

  2. It could have been the runt or it could have been sick. If the other one keeps acting like the one that died i would have him checked out by the vet.

  3. Yes as the other answers say he could have just been destined to die anyway. But with another bunny showing signs of falling ill, can i ask about the hutch you've put them in, Is it new? second hand? been stored in the back of the garage? or been in constant use?  I'm just suggesting that a bug/germ/virus etc.might have laid dormant in the hutch & then infected the bunnys. :-(

I hope i'm wrong, & it was just fate. :-(

edit:  I'm sorry the other one has died :-(

Fingers crossed for the rest of them.

Edit again: lathargy can be a sign of fly-strike, if another one  acts like the other two did, check  it's bum for maggots, i know it's nasty but it's just another possabillity.

If you do find maggots in it's bum, rush it to the vet, but unfortionatly fly-strike has a very high mortallity rate.

  4. Heya

It could of just been the runt of the litter or maybe it didnt get as much food from the mum as the rest. Keep an eye on the sleepy one but try to keep the babys with the mum at all costs because a baby bunny that is hand reared very rarely survives. =] x*x

  5. Sometimes when a baby rabbit eats too much too fast they will basically drown when the milk goes into the wind pipe.  That happened to one of my baby rabbits.  Sorry to hear that thought.
