  1. All the things doctors and midwives do to measure you during pregnancy are based on their experience and their training.  From fundal height to how far you are effaced and dilated, if you went to 10 doctors/midwives on the same day, you'd likely get 10 different opinions.  The midwife who measured you in the hospital is not your regular care provider so I wouldn't hold much store in what she says necessarily.  She may have measured wrong or used a different technique than your midwife uses.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, but do mention it to your own midwife when you see her next.  Fundal measurements can be off just like due dates can be off and ultrasounds can be off.  It is helpful to keep in mind that all these measurements are just used as guidelines and are based on averages.  Measuring helps monitor the pregnancy, but aren't necessarily a fool-proof way of determining exactly how far along the pregnancy is or when the baby will be born.  Certainly if your own midwife noticed a measurement out of the ordinary she would investigate further.  It may be best to ease your mind by just calling your midwife and telling her of your concern.  She would probably be glad to have you come in for a measurement check to be sure.

  2. Check with a doctor

  3. Fundal height is highly variable in the same woman throughout the same day.  It can be effected by baby's position, fullness of bladder, fullness of bowels, person measuring, etc.  If you have a bunch of normal measurements and one that doesn't fit with them, go with the measurements that you've been getting most of the time.  I'm 20 weeks, and within the same day, my fundal height varies from 19 to 23 cm.

You can also measure fundal height yourself.  Just take a cloth measuring tape, put one end at the top edge of your pubic bone, and measure up to where you feel the top of your uterus.

But, really, you don't need to worry based on that one measurement.  And apparent size of the whole tummy does not necessarily correlate to fundal height.  Women with the same fundal height may have bigger or smaller looking tummies based on how they're carrying, baby's position, how much they weigh overall, height, amount of tummy fat, etc.

  4. Around that time in my pregnancy, my midwife said that I was measuring too small also.  I requested an ultrasound for them to be sure, and it turned out that my baby was just positioned so low that their measurements were off.  My son ended up being a healthy 7 lb 12 oz

I did start eating a lot of protein just in case though =)

I would request an ultrasound so they can be sure

  5. I would not worry to much, I was 2 behind almost my whole pregnancy and she came out small but healthy. If you are to concerned then you should ask you mid wife, but I am sure 2 behind is ok. :) CONGRATS!

  6. Measurments of your belly really dont mean much of anything....you can measure anywhere from 3-4 weeks ahead or behind.

I measured ahead with my first 2 children and behind with my third.
