Question:

3 y.o. gets HUGE swelling from mosquito bites?

I think my 3 y.o. daughter may have a slight allergy to mosquito bites. She use to have a normal reaction when she was younger. Not sure if there is a new strain of mosquitos out there now, but this year she gets huge swelling!. If one is on her hand, her whole hand swells. She is quite thin and once she had one on her forearm and she looked like Popeye! They don't seem to bother her, other than typical itching like anyone would get from a mosquito bite.

Any suggestions for good bug repellent that does not smell terrible and treatment suggestions?

Thanks!

there are some really good repellants out there-  just go to a  local store like whole foods if u want to go the natural way.- rosewater i remember was ok.

we always used incense coils in india to ward off mozzies- u can get them nonsecented now.

    treatment. an antihistimene

bakingsoda paste on the site.= bakign soda + a little water

i wore longish shirt s even in the hot weather and

keep her nails short to avoid scratchign and scarring- that was my biggest problem - i still have scars 30 years later

  2. Avon makes a 'Skin So Sft' combo sunblock and insect repellent lotion.  Our pediatrician told us it was fine to use on my 21 month old twins.

I've also been told that if you brew chamomile tea, let it cool and swab it on the skin using a cotton ball it makes a wonderful mosquito repellent.  I've never tried it but have heard it from several people.

  3. This is very common with toddlers. Give her some Benedryl. That will help with the swelling and itching. You can always call her doctor and find out if there's something else that they would prefer for her to have.

  4. I still get these and I'm 23! Benedryl definitely helps, but if it doesn't make the swelling go away, if it gets worse, if the skin hardens or becomes stiff, or if the area becomes warm to the touch, be sure to take her to a doctor! Twice I have had these huge mosquito bites turn into staph infections that required hospitalization for IV antibiotics because I thought they were just "bad mosquito bites". Doh! Don't mean to alarm you, but something to watch out for.

  5. That use to happen to me but after a while i don't have it any more because my Doctor thought i was allergic to ants but I am not.

  6. When one gets those itchy bumps from mosquito bites it IS an allergic reaction.  Obviously your child is very allergic to the mosquito saliva.  You will have to check with your doctor as to what to use.

  7. A lot of kids get big welts from mosquito bites. You can use benedryl cream or calamine lotion on the bites. Try Avon Skin So Soft as a repellent. They say it works and it's worth a try before using any harsh sprays.
