3 years left before Manny Pacquiao’s boxing career ends; fans hope for a fight with
Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Awful news for boxing fans: eight-division world champion, The Pac-Man, the Fighting Pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao has decided to bid farewell to boxing in three years. As millions of fans’ hearts break collectively,
one wonders as to who will now entertain and rule the boxing world.
We repeat: Manny Pacquiao told reporters in the Philippines that he plans to retire from professional boxing in three years.
“Malapit na, pinakamalayo na siguro ang 35 (Certainly before I reach the age 35)," in his words, precisely. “I talked with my mother and I told her I can still fight in the ring,” he added, speaking at a press conference before the conferment
of the Congressional Medal of Distinction.
Recently, the Filipino congressman received a congressional medal from his compatriots for the second time following his latest victory over Antonio Margarito.
On the question regarding his next opponent and a third session with Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao said, "I have no problem with another fight with Marquez. I can sign a contract anytime. But of course we have to
take into consideration the promotion. Boxing, after all, is still business.” Pacquiao said he would be enthusiastic to fight Juan Manuel Marquez again even though boxing fans would not really bother watching the clash. "If I were a boxing fan," he said, "I
would not watch Pacquiao versus Marquez."
The Pac-Man did not mention anything about his expected fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. He did not seem to be interested in whether he would fight Mayweather Jr. at any point over the next three years or not. However, the fight
boxing fans all over the world are hoping will somehow happen (Fingers crossed.)
Pacquiao showed a (rather noble) shift in priorities: he is now concerned with serving the society rather than continuing with boxing, as he said that he wanted now to be a “champion public servant.”
Pacquiao said: “Boxing is a source of pride, it’s my job and I have to take advantage of my youth for it. But now I have to focus on serving the people of Sarangani.” For boxing noobs: Kiamba, Sarangani is the hometown of his wife
and he is heading Sarangani as a congressman.
We will miss you, Pac-Man, and your countless services to the world of boxing.
