I recently lost 3 female bettas, 1 male betta, 1 african dwarf frog, 1 female guppy, 1 clown loach, and 1 cherry barb. This aquarium is months old. the fish were pretty old but not that old. my replacement female betta died as well. My aquarium is a 30 gallons. I checked ammonia, Ph, nitrate, and nitrite and everything is in safe status. The only thing that I did different this time when I last changed the water was added a bit more aquarium salt to kill off the snail. My temperature has also been at a steady 80.5-80.7. What's wrong? Is my salt killing my fish?

  1. Instead of adding salt to kill your snail just remove it if it annoys you that much.... Apple (Mystery) Snails are beautiful and very useful creatures.

I don't know whether the salt killed your fish, I think something else may be the culprit, unless you used salt not suitable for the aquarium...

Sorry about your losses, stop adding salt and check your most important levels ie ammonia/nitrite/nitrates, they are quite often the source of fish death.  Apart from that as I said I am sorry about your loss and hope you can find a solution   ::))))

  2. Try using less salt, or maybe change the water. There could be some kind of posion in the water, or not enough of oxygen. you should take a sample of your water to a pet store to get it checked again, and ask them if it has anything to do with the oxygen or if there is some kind of posion or disease. You can also examine the fish that died to see if there gills are red, and if there is any spots on the fish that seem out of the ordernary.

  3. It seems all went to h**l after your last water change, from personal experiences and alot of people I know here in the eatesrn side of the U.S. water tends to be a problem, I dont care what my city tells me my water is.......... My fish have started doing fine with a reverse osmosis filter,Loaches are sensitive to copper.

Any how ,water changes can cause a burst in fish attitudes I don't trust platies with any bettas . Next time you do a water change make sure you use water of the same temps and study how the fish act...

Also is you water dechlor old????

Buy a cheap test kit for swimming  pools which test for chlorine theres others for fish also.....

How did the snails get in you tank!!! They can carry pests too, since they can survive very bad conditions that most fish will not tolerate......

  4. Well first off all most of those fish are pure fresh water so i'd go easy on the salt because the more salt added too the water, the harder it is too extract oxygen from the water and the more damaging it is too the gills, becareful when adding salt it can be dangerous

  5. Are you using some thing to take out the chlorine out of the water?

I had 8 fish in a 5 gallon aquarium and most of them died until only 2 were left,Maybe because lack of room,Try using a bigger tank,And when you buy your fish make sure they are healthy good swimmers active,no type of disease like ich ..

    Good luck!!

  6. The only thing I notice that may be wrong with your aquarium is that your temp. is a little high, but I don't think high enough to be killing your fish.

You shouldn't be putting your male bettas with your females and that could be stressing them out, and causing them to die. ADF sometimes die if they are unable to get food. They don't eat flakes (or rarely) and pretty much require you personally feeding it in order for it to get it's food. Guppies are also not too hardy of a fish so if you just bought it it could have been sick or unable to adjust.

As far as the other two I have no idea what could be wrong. How new are they?

Edit: Adding salt in the ration of 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons is fine (and actually quite recommended) but be sure you are adding freshwater aquarium salt. Any amount of marine salt would easily kill your fish. I would be cautious when adding more than this amount though.

  7. your not supposed to put salt in.

leave it in room teampature water

    dont feed it too much

    dont feed it too little

dont put too much water because some times they like the bottom but  dont have enough time to get to the top

    :)

dont scare it by puttin your face to the glass

(thats how my beta fish died :( well i was 6 then and im 11 so now i know and i dont want to deal with fish anymore i have a dog now which i can take care of)
