You set up a cross-multiply equation.

30 / 75 = x / 100

so it's 75x = 30 x 100

75x = 3000

x = 3000/75 = 40 so it's 40%

Then for your 2nd question, the equation looks like this:

25 / 100 = x / 1595

100x = 25 x 1595

100x = 39875

x = 39875/100 = 398.75 is your answer

A percent is some number/100.

The easiest way to do this is through setting up a proportion and  solve for the unknown variable.  Remember that you can add/subtract/multiply/divide by the same amount to both sides of an equals equation and still maintain the equality.

30/75 = x/100

(in my head I can say that x = 40, so 40%, but...  75 is 3/4 of 100, so multiply 30 by 3/4 to get 40.)

(30/75)*100 = x/100 * 100

(2/5)*100 = x

200/5 = x

40 = x

25/100 = x/1595

(25/100) = (x/1595)

(1/4) = (x/1595)

(1/4)*(1595) = 1595*(x/1595)

(1595/4) = x

398.75 = x
