I'm having an ultrasound done and I will be 30 weeks, they are making me drink 32 oz of water and I have to hold it for 3 hours. I pee ALL the time as it is, I just can't imagine making it 3 hours!! Anyone else have to do this??

I had an ultrasound done at 18 weeks and they didn't make me drink any water.

  1. yes that is rather mean i had to do that with my first pregnancy throughout the whole thing they never told me why but your far enough along that you shouldnt have to fill your bladder. before your ultra sound date call your doctor and ask them to explain in lamains terms why oyu have to drink so much water AND hold it for 3 hours that is just not right.

  2. Call the facility where you are scheduled and confirm these instructions.  If you are having your ultrasound at the hospital's imaging department or a free standing imaging center, don't call your doctor for clarification.  Call the facility directly.  It amazes me how many patient show up prepped incorrectly after their doctor's office is involved in setting up the appointment.

Make sure you have something in your bladder.  Drink about 2 glasses of water about one hour before your ultrasound, and don't pee.  If your bladder is empty, we cannot visualize your cervix or any baby parts near the cervix.  If they are checking on a low lying placenta or placenta previa, you need a bit in your bladder, but 32 oz sounds like overkill.  Plus, we never ask a patient to hold a full bladder for 3 hours.  Even early in pregnancy (or even for a non-pregnancy related pelvic ultrasound), we ask for 32 ounces of water, to be drank 1 hour prior to your scan.  Your sonographer will bring you into the ultrasound room, and try to do the ultrasound.  If you do not have enough urine in your bladder, you might be rescheduled, but you will not be turned away when you walk in the door.  They will check you first.

It really sounds like you need to clarifiy this......Best wishes..

  3. Hmm that doesn't sound right at all. I would call your doctor and confirm the instructions again.

  4. never heard if that. i am not prego yet but i pee more than that and when i was pregoo i peed all the time ,umm ask them why and let me know

  5. Thats weird i didnt have to drink any water at 28 weeks they said that there is enough fluid in there, if your bladder is to full then they cant see the baby because it is pushed to far up. And how could they expect  you to hold it for 3 hours no normal person can do that nevermind a pregnant woman!! I would double check on that. Good Luck!
