Question:

301 Redirect?

I have two websites. http://www.casitas.net. They are pretty much the same. They both have Page ranks of 5 and casitas shows up higher for the most important search terms I am chasing. If I do a 301 redirect from staab to casitas how much will that boost the PR and the search results of casitas ?

What will happen in 6 months if I decide I want to use staabvr for something else and take off the 301 ?

Thanks in advance for your input

  1. Tricky area for sure. If you redirect your pages eventually your redirected site may drop out of the page rankings all together because the search engines will know that the pages are no longer relevant for the search terms that were used to find it...its called a permanent redirect.

If you are just trying to boost PR consider a link campaign where you coordinate with third party sites to link to yours. Increase you submissions to directories and hone in on the keywords and phrases that target your niche.

If you decide that you want to reuse the domain in the future you will need to start fresh. Targeted content, site submissions to search engines and growth through good keyword usage. This of course is a detailed process that extends well beyond your question.

Using 301's to boost another pages rank in the search engines would not be my first option. It only makes sense if you have significant amounts of visitors that need to find the same relevant content that they were searching for to begin with.

You can use redirects in a way that harms both sites if the search engines feel you are redirecting visitors for the wrong purposes. Here are a couple of articles that I found for you:
