30th Annual Hobey Baker Banquet to be held on June 23, 2011 – Miami Unversity’s Andy Miele wins HB Award
It has been 30 years since the first Hobey Baker Banquet was held in honour of the top National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ice hockey players and the tradition still continues as this year’s annual ceremony has been scheduled for Thursday, June
23rd, at the Saint Paul River Center in Minnesota.
Andy Miele, forward player for the Miami University Red Hawks, will be awarded this year’s Hobey Baker Award for his outstanding performance as a college hockey player.
He was chosen for this award for his exceptional playing skills, earning him 71 points in only 39 games which was the highest in the country and 11 points ahead of any competition.
Miele also signed a free agent contract with the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise, Phoenix Coyotes, earlier this year in April, in pursuit of a career in hockey.
A number of honoraria are expected to attend the yearly event which includes 2010 Hobey Baker Award winner, Blake Geoffrion, who is currently playing for Nashville Predators, Matt Gilroy of New York Rangers and Ryan Duncan.
The award is named after Hobey Baker himself who is regarded as the first American ice hockey star back in 1910, when he played for the Princeton University’s hockey team and was also a war hero after serving in the United States of America’s Army Air Service
during World War I.
Baker was also a well known football player. This honourable award was first awarded to Neal Broten from Minnesota in 1981 and has continued ever since.
Brian Burke will be the main speaker at Thursday’s event, who is the President and General Manager of Toronto Maple Leafs, along with Lane MacDonald, winner of the 1989 Hobey Baker Award from Harvard University.
Single and group tickets are available for purchase to attend the highly honourable event which is a huge supportive opportunity for the top prospectus players in colleges and universities.
It is through these events that hard working players earn much deserved recognition and are enabled to move on to the major league to continue their career objectives as some of the greatest college players.
