30th Villa de Madrid 2011: Men’s Sabre World Cup starts in Madrid – Fencing Preview
The Thirtieth Edition of Villa de Madrid 2011 is scheduled to take place today at the Centro Deportivo Municipal Barajas in Madrid, Spain.
This Men’s Sabre World Cup will comprise of both individual and team competition among Senior male fencers with the approval by the International Fencing Federation (FIE) starting from May 13-15.
This tournament is being organised by the Spanish Fencing body that will be held at Barajas Sports Centre for three days. The first day will comprise of the preliminary pool rounds of individual event whereas the second day will continue with the pre-qualifying
rounds with the Top-64 Direct Elimination Tableau. On May 15, the team competition will commence followed by the prize distribution ceremony, thus concluding the event.
In the Men’s Sabre Individuals, a total of 192 fencers will participate from more than 40 different countries. A total of 26 pools have been created, each comprising of seven individuals. Few of the World’s top fencers will be provided with an automatic
bye into the Top-64 Tableau.
For the past ten years, World, Olympic and European Champions in the Individual tournament have been taking part and are found in the Top-64 list.
This competition is one of the decision-making and most important events for the fencers to qualify into the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. Villa de Madrid 2011 has been recognised as one of the Olympic Qualifiers by the FIE. The fencers which perform
well during the tournament have a good chance to make it into the Olympics for their respective countries.
In Men’s Sabre team competition, a total of 20 teams have registered to take part in the World Cup. This year will feature the World, Olympic and European Champions in action at the Madrid Qualifiers like the last ten years.
Meanwhile, the Spain Fencing Championship 2011 for Under-15 concluded last weekend in which all three weapon disciplines were conducted among both U-15 Junior Boys and Girls.
The event included both individual and team competitions in which various Spanish fencing clubs had taken part.
In the Individual events, the fencers to win the top-podium place are shown along with their respective club is as follows:
U-15 Men Individuals:
Paul Ambel Jimenez from CDEM-GR in Men’s foil, Paul Bertet Roser from SAM-B in Men’s sabre and Angel Pujol Fabregat from SEA-T in Men’s epee.
U-15 Women Individuals:
Helena Alghero Homes from CMAL-B in Women’s foil, Maria Teresa Bley Betegon from EC-M in Women’s sabre and Julia Martin Garcia from CEP-M in Women’s epee.
The individuals were concluded on May 8 followed by the team competition on the same day and the clubs to take a top podium place in team event are as follows:
Men’s Team:
SEA-T came first in Men’s epee team, SAM-B in Men’s foil team and EC-M in Men’s sabre team.
Women’s Team:
SAES-BU won in the Women’s epee team, SAM-B in Women’s foil team and EC-M in Women’s sabre team.
