I am closing in on my pregnancy and getting really scared? What does it feel like when your water breaks? Does the real pain start after your water breaks? When do the bad contractions start? How long do you bleed after giving birth? Will the hospital give you some booklets? This is my first child and I have the slightest clue what to do after my water breaks. I am afraid I wont make it to the hospital in time. My appointments have been moved up to 2 weeks. All mothers please respond.

  1. First you need to relax, nothing about childbirth will last with you forever except the baby. It really isnt as bad as you think.  There is no pain when your water breaks, even if the dr has to break your water. No pain at all!!!  The amount of time you bleed after childbirth varies from person to person. Usually with your first child you are in labor a longer anount of  time, (not always) usually 12hours at least.  The chances that you wont make it to deliver are unlikely.  Ask your dr. when you should go to the hospital, im sure as soon as you think your in labor you will forget all the things we have told you and call the dr anyway.  The hospital has videos and phamplets, if you are scared though i dont know if i would watch them.  Just remember that a womans body is made to give birth, you will go  through many changes for the baby to fit through the opening, you will have experienced dr.'s and nurses helping you through the entire process, and  you will soon forget all the pain you have went through.  Talk to your dr. about all your concerns at your next app.  The sad thing about coming here for answers is that some people thrive off working other people up. You may not get accurate help.

Its really not that bad, ive had 3 and they were all worth it.

    good luck and RELAX...

  2. well your still 9 weeks away! thats 2 months! if your water breaks you go to the hospital asap! thats it! have a cell phone on you at all times.

  3. Ok you can go to the library and get book about anything and everything on pregnancy. but to answer some of your questions. When I went into labor with my third my water didn't break it leaked. I honestly thought I was just peeing myself. The contractions at the beginning are not painful but progressively get more painful as you dilate more and the babys head comes down. I was induced with my first 2 kids and the doctors broke my water which came out as a big gush. It does not hurt when your water breaks. If your water breaks when you are already in labor it can make the contractions more painful because there is nothing surrounding the baby and there is more pressure. After my first child I bled for 4 weeks. My second I bled for 3 weeks and my third I only bled like 10days. I doubt you will be in labor and not make it to the hospital in time. When real labor starts you will know and you will go. The hospital will give you all sorts of booklets about taking care of newborns. At your next doctor visit ask for some information about labor and delivery and usually they will give you some material on when to call doctor and when to go to hospital. Good luck and don't worry. I hope I settled some fears.

  4. With my second and third, I was at 8 cm when I went in and my waters had to be broken by the doctor right before I pushed, so the water has nothing to do with the contractions... and the most intense contractions happen during the transition **shudder** when you go from 8 to 10 cm... with my first baby, my water leaked and I didn't notice anything initially, just my underwear were WET, and I had to keep changing them, but I never had a gush, just gradual leaking for hours...

If your water breaks, go in within an hour. If you just have contractions, wait until they are about 5 minutes apart (roughly, they may not be like clockwork) and really, the pain gets too intense for you to do anything during it... no worries, if you are in doubt, just call labor and delivery.

  5. you'll know when your water breaks, you'll feel like you wet yourself and it just wont stop. it's not painful when your water breaks. your contractions will start as slight pains but not anything drastic and will eventually increase in pain, the closer the baby is, the more painful it gets. the hospital can give you information booklets and may even run a few classes for first time mums while you are in there with your baby. when your water breaks, go to the hospital but don't panic, your first is usually your longest labor. my first was 18 hours and my second 6 hours. you'll have plenty of time. and if the pain gets too much, ask for an epidural, you won't feel any pain from the belly down.
