I am getting my license in 2 years and am going to buy a mopar of somesort. But where I am there are no 383 of 440 cars for sale under 15,000. But there are a ton of dusters and darts and roadrunners with 318s. What kind of performance can these engines put out.

  1. Get yourself a little beater...Like a dodge neon....Then look for your car...Me i,d get a duster or a demon to fix up.There are plenty of motors to be had...Build yourself a good runnin street car!!!You can even take it to the drag strip and run a respectable time. The cool thing about building the car is that it is built to your taste!!!!!

  2. Ive got a fullsize dodge conversion van with a 318 in it. Never do i put the pedal to the floor and when i get close i can keep the tires on the pavement. So unless you are absolutely crazy a 318 would be more than enough.

  3. Stock 2 barrel 318's have about 165 horse but they do respond well to hop ups.

  4. Go for the Dusters, Darts, and early '70's Roadrunners, always liked the '73-'74 Roadrunners myself, the big blocks are hard to come by and as you now know very expensive to purchase. A 318 is a good engine and responds well to breathing modifications. A good intake and carb and a set of inch and 5/8's headers and true dual exhausts will do wonders for the engine. Don't expect to burn the tires off the car though because there's not enough torque to do so.

You can get 300 horsepower at the flywheel without spending a ton of money and 350 horsepower by spending not quite a ton. Forget 340 heads, they're almost impossible to find these days, use 360's, they have bigger valves and are more plentiful.

You can use a 360 crate engine, about 365 horsepower, but gas mileage suffers. They are readily available and not too awfully expensive. You might be able to find a complete 360 that needs some work for a good price and since you have a little time you should start looking now if that's what you want.

Saw a 318 Dart consistently turn mid 12's in the quarter mile but it was heavily modified and the body lightened to weigh about 2600 pounds, definitely not a streetable vehicle.

    Good luck finding your ride.

  5. Stick a pair of 340 heads on there, a good cam, headers, aluminum intake, and a Holley 4 barrel and let her rip!

  6. the 318 doesn't do very good because of the small bore on it but you can replace it with a performance 360 which is one really good small block and get tons of power from it,you can still find a lot of dusters for sale, there's one across the hill from where i live at now for 2 grand, and its worth fixing, but its rough body wise, the 360 is one of the best small blocks ever built, and really you,d be better off with it,especially for street performance, the 318 has to many limitations on what can be done to it,with the 360 you don't have that problem,i own one that's running 365 horse power and its barely built, and it does great on eating small block chevys and fords, good luck, hope you find your project car,

  7. The Chrysler 318 can be a bit of a gas-guzzler, but performance is about par for an engine of that size. The 318 however doesn't have any valve guides, just bored passages for the valve stems. So , with a used engine, a good plan would be to take the heads to a rebuild shop and have valve guides installed.
