32 Greatest footballers in the history of the English Premier League - Part 13
 22. Fernando Torres (Continued)
The goal simply silenced all of his critics including the Manchester United figure Aaron Williams who kept on writing “harsh” stuff about the newly-signed Liverpool player. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, as a controversial penalty was given by the referee
Rob Styles and Chelsea managed to capitalize on it. The 62nd minute penalty was enough to hold the Liverpool striking force, and they could not score another goal over “The Blues.”
After Torres’ arrival, Liverpool did not even manage to win a single cup and every year Torres gives a fabulous performance but Liverpool just can’t do enough alongside him to help the team win a title. A year before Liverpool’s record signing, the English
club won the UEFA Champions League but now it has been too long since the Merseyside has won a single cup, and it is Torres and Gerard who are trying to end the trophy drought at Anfield. During the 2009-2010 season, Liverpool totally disappointed their fans
as they managed to take a 7th place spot in the English Premier League, while Torres was injured almost for the whole season and had to see his team fail from the sidelines.
While Torres was busy making the scoring charts, it was the Spaniard who managed to impress the Spanish national side. He played for the Under-17 World Cup that took place in Trinidad and Tobago. He also performed for the Under-19 European Championships
that took place in Norway and the Spaniards were the ones who actually won. Fernando Torres managed to bag himself the golden boot and the golden ball award of the tournament, as he performed extraordinarily well. Later in the same year, he made his national
team debut against Portugal and scored his first goal for the Spanish side against Italy on April 28th, 2004.
It was expected that the Spanish side are going to perform fabulously during the FIFA World Cup 2006 that took place in Germany but they did not really manage to impress much. However, Torres’ demands were to rise after the World Cup, as he managed to score
a fabulous goal on a volley when the Spanish team won the first group game against Ukraine. He also helped the team win the game against Tunisia and increased the number of zeroes on his price tag; while he was busy bagging goals to help the Spaniards secure
a group-stage win.
During the match against Saudi Arabia, the Spanish striker was rested off as they were confirmed in the pre-quarter finals. He came on during the 70th minute as he replaced Antonio Reyes. He was one of the leading goal scorers of the tournament,
as he scored 3 goals in the tournament. Not only did he score 3 goals in the tournament, he was the first one to reach that mark. Later in the round of 16, the Spanish team got the very strong French side. Even though the Spaniards took the lead, they eventually
lost the match 3-1 as the French team managed to reach the final.
Fernando Torres is simply a sensation and the English Premier League is simply lucky to have him there. However, the fragile “glass man” is not good enough to stay in the Premier League because he gets injured a little “too much.” Just because of his injuries,
the English club suffers a lot and during the FIFA World Cup 2010, he barely managed to impress as he was suffering from fitness crises. He finally appeared in the final match that the Spanish team actually won but he was the one who was carried out on stretcher
because of a hamstring injury that he suffered while running for the ball.
