32 Greatest footballers in the history of the English Premier League - Part 39

4. Alan Shearer:
Alan Shearer was a professional footballer back in his time. The former striker is currently working as a TV pundit and is also an “out-of-work” football manager. He used to play as a striker during his prime time and is still famous for his goal scoring
for the English Premier League teams Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and also the English national side.
Alan Shearer is considered to be one of the best strikers of all time. Currently he is the leading goal scorer of Newcastle United and the English Premier League and no player has broken his record.
After retiring as a professional footballer, Shearer is currently working as a television pundit for BBC. However, towards the end of his career he worked hard to gain the UEFA Pro License and wanted to become a manager. In 2009, he did manage to become
one when he left his job at BBC for a short period of time to become the manager of his former club Newcastle United only for the last few games; basically just to save them from relegation during 2008-2009 season.
The “amazing” English striker Alan Shearer started his career from the English top-flight team Southampton back in 1988. During his time with Southampton, Shearer managed to score a hat trick for the club and helped them become one of the top guns of the
English League. Moreover, Shearer started to become famous for his classic style of play, his strength and his outstanding goal scoring ability.
Just because of his outstanding performance with Southampton, Shearer got called up for the English national team. However, his days at Southampton came to an end as well. The international call-up came along with a transfer to the English side Blackburn
Rovers. The Englishman decided to join the club in 1992 and became an integral part of the club.
Shearer established himself as an outstanding striker in Northern England and was also a first choice in the English squad. His great form and goal scoring helped Blackburn Rovers win the English Premier League in 1994-1995, when the English striker managed
to score 34 goals in one season.
That year, he was named the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year and also won the PFA Player of the Year award the very next year.
Next season, in 1995-1996, the world saw Alan Shearer making his debut in the UEFA Champions League. That very year he was also the top scorer of the English Premier League as he took his tally above 30 again and managed to find the net 31 times.
During the Euro 1996, Shearer managed to become the top scorer again, but this time for England as he managed to score 5 goals throughout the tournament.
He became fond of the “golden boot” award as he was often recognized as the highest goal scorer of the tournament. Alan Shearer managed to win the Premier League golden boot again in 1996-1997 when he managed to score 25 goals.
A world record move of 15 million pounds took place between Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United as Shearer decided to turn to the zebras, who were his favourite team since he was a little kid and started o play football. The move came along with the Euro
96 tournament while Shearer remained in the English club for the rest of his career.
Even though he used to praise his “peak time” alongside Blackburn Rovers, Alan Shearer still managed to win silver medals with Newcastle United as they often used to come second in the English Premier League and the FA Cup. Later, he also managed to bag
himself another PFA Player of the Year award.
In 1996, Shearer was named as the captain of the English team and was given the captain’s armband for his club Newcastle United right after 3 years, in 1999. However, the Englishman decided to retire from international football after Euro 2000 when he finished
his goal scoring tally for England on 30 goals, with only 63 appearances for them.
Alan Shearer was simply a legend in the English Premier League and he still holds the record of scoring the most number of goals in the Premier League. Alan Shearer has scored 260 goals in the Premier League and not even players like Cantona, Ronaldo or
Henry have managed to surpass this mark. He is definitely a legend!
