33 weeks, small weight gain, yet U/S says she's 5 lb. Am I destined to have a big baby?

I went to the doctor's yesterday at 33 weeks, 3 days to do a routine ultrasound on the baby. My doc was amazed when she measured 5 lbs, 0 oz already because I have not gotten very big. I was a thin, but not skinny person before I got pregnant and I've worked out a lot during my pregnancy, but for her to already reach 5 lbs...wow! And, I've only gained 23 lbs so far. Anyway, my doc predicted her weight to be 8 lbs or larger, and he said there's a good chance that she can reach 9 lbs based on her current weight. So, am I destined to have a big baby? Or could her growth slow down?

  1. My midwife told me that in the last 14 weeks any excess sugar or fat will go straight to fat on the baby as they can not process it, that might be it, I don't know what you eat. The main thing though, I was so worried about eating excess sugar and fat, I hardly ever indulged and ate majorly healthy, not a bad thing, but my baby ended up being born @ 31 wks and was only 2lbs 11oz, Be happy she is healthy and if anything happened god forbid, she would be a great weight. and the ulrasound is not always right, there is a major margin for error.

  2. ultrasound can be off by as much as a pound in either direction, i wouldn't worry about it - sounds like you and your baby are both really healthy and things are going well...of course, her growth rate can slow down, but might not, and that's ok.  your doctor will monitor you and let you know if there is anything to worry about.  best of luck to you!

  3. Not necessarily. Her growth can slow down, yes, but also the u/s can be off a pound either way. I was told the same thing. At 34 weeks 1 day they said my little girl was 6 lbs 11 oz already (she had been measuring ahead the whole pregnancy) and about 13 days later when she was born she actually weighed 6 lbs 7 oz. So, they can definitely be off.

  4. I dont know but I'm going through a similar situation. Most people say I only look to be about 4 months and ask me if I eat enough, it's frustrating cause I do. I've gained 17 pounds, I'm 29 weeks and the doctor says the baby's a little bigger than he should be but she didnt tell me exact measurements and weight like your doc.

  5. u/s can be off by as much as a full pound. 23 lbs is a completely normal weight gain and in healthy limits. if she is big than be thankful she's healthy =D good luck
