33-year-old Eric Chavez makes a good impression in his first start against Boston Red Sox
The 33-year-old Eric Chavez finally got his much desired opportunity on Saturday at Fenway Park, when he started for the New York Yankees on the designated hitter position against the Boston Red Sox. The player had been trying his best to make the cut in
Spring Training.
With a role in the first team, he wasted no time in making an impression as he pulled the Green Monster to his aid. The Yankees were able to pull off a 9 – 4 victory against their archrivals, thanks to Chavez who availed a 3-for-5 statistic in his encounter.

"I answered that for myself in spring really," Chavez said. "I just felt really good. Some of the balls I hit, I know it's in there. It's just a matter of staying with the same approach."
The hard hitter pulled out two doubles against the stadium walls, adding good marks to his record as he moves onto a batting average of .500 for the season. Chavez was able to drive in a run today for the team. However, his best moment came against Red Sox
pitcher, Clay Buchholz who threw two fastballs first and then proceeded to a slow pitch which Chavez did little to hit.
"I kind of had the idea he was going to come back with another one at some point," Chavez said. "The first [double], I wasn't trying to hit that way, I just happened to stay on it. [The wall] helps with the second one. The second one, I didn't hit that great."
The fixture has sit well with manager Joe Girardi, who is looking at a good player in his ranks.
"I wouldn't have a problem playing Chavy on a regular basis," Girardi said.
The skipper explained that if Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez or any designated hitter ever went down, Chavez would be the right player to start in regularly for the club and the team in the normal batting lineup. He deliberated on that though, saying tactfully
that now Chzvex needed to play the hitter three to four days in a row. After the stint he would eventually get a day off.
