343 Industries reveals Halo 4 Install Size – Video Games Update
Microsoft has revealed that the popular console shooter, Halo 4, being developed by 343 Industries (343i) will require 8 GB free space on the Xbox 360 hard drive for the multiplayer to work.
With the increasing rate of death of the DVD drives on the Xbox 360’s, Microsoft announced that a dashboard update would allow gamers to install a game to their Xbox 360’s hard drives but would still require the game disc in the drive to play. At that time
Microsoft also claimed that game installation will be optional and will only serve as to reduce the sound of the machine and provide faster load times in games.
For this purpose Microsoft was selling two bundles of the Xbox 360. The Starter bundle, priced at $199, comes with only a 4 GB hard drive. This means that gamers who are not willing to shell out the extra $50- $80 for a 360 hard drive update will not be
able to play the multiplayer of Halo 4, which will no doubt be the biggest exclusive launch yet.
This is a pretty smart move from Microsoft’s point of view as Halo is a franchise which moves a lot of consoles at launch. Halo 4 has the highest numbers of pre-orders so far, even beating those of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. So it is likely that when it
comes out Microsoft will be making a killing on not only the game but also on Xbox 360 accessories as lots of gamers without a 360 hard drive will be getting one just for Halo 4.
Luckily if the gamers don’t want to buy a hard drive, they can just get a cheaper 8 GB – 16 GB USB Flash drive which will also, as reported by 343i, suffice for the Halo 4 game install.
Another question that fans might be asking is if Halo 4 will be on more than one disc? The news of a compulsory install seems to indicate that it’s on at least two. Nothing to complain about as this just shows that 343i is developing a quality product and
not cutting out parts to fit the game on a single disc.
