The development studio is not going to change the core dynamic of the game. Instead 343 is focusing on giving players freedom and ‘choice’.
The Halo series has become a part of modern pop-culture since the first game was released all those years ago on the PC. A sequel, three-quel, prequel and offshoot later, everyone thought they’d seen the last of the series as Bungie, the game’s developer, announced that they were leaving the Halo IP for pastures new.
Microsoft bought up the rights to the series and before the door closed on Master Chief’s cryogenic sleep chamber door, a new trilogy for the game was announced with 343 studios at the helm.
In a recent interview the development studio pointed out that they already had a story arc sorted for the latest Halo trilogy. One would think that would be enough information to keep fans of the series occupied for a while but 343 studios had other ideas.
When asked if they were going to fiddle around with the gameplay that made Halo the force in gaming it is today, Josh Holmes, the creative director at 343, explained that they wanted to remain true to the series, in the least exaggerated way possible.
He said, “We’re definitely not creating Mirror’s Edge set in the Halo Universe – so I wouldn’t go as far as saying we’re radically changing the gameplay style in a way that it’s unrecognisable.”
He continued, “One of the things that we’ve said is that we want this to very much feel true to that Halo feel that we believe fans everywhere love.” Before adding, “But we also want to evolve it and add new experiences, new ways to play and give players a greater sense of empowerment through choice.”
Mr. Holmes also pointed out that the choice and freedom was “one of the absolute game pillars for the game – giving players as much choice as possible throughout all of the experience.”
Halo 4 seems to be shaping up rather nicely but everyone’s attention will be on E3 and then finally on the release date for the return of Master Chef to the gaming world.
