34th National Games: NGOC fails to begin the fencing event on schedule – Fencing Update
It seems that the National Games Organizing Committee (NGO) was unable to start the fencing event in the 34th National Games due to some issues with acquiring fencing equipment which caused a delay.
The timings for the tender for the supply of fencing equipment have been mishandled and have caused serious embarrassment to the organisers.
Fencers faced their own set of issues as they were unable to practice with worn out swords and lack of other necessary equipment. With all the issues going on with the tender, it now looks like the date for the fencing events has been put back to February
21.
As usual, the blame game has already started as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is pointing to the Jharkhan Olympic Association (JOA) as the reason for the delay and the mismanagement of the entire issue.
An anonymous coach of Jharkhand Fencing Association (JFA) commented, “Our players with the help of few volunteers are installing the turf and the equipments at the venue, as no technical officials are here to assist or guide them."
The coach also commented on the fact that by moving the date for fencing from February 18 to February 21 is quite embarrassing for all of the organisers of the tournament. It seems that nobody took the time to manage things properly causing not only a loss
of finances but also a loss in image for the NGOC.
As the tenders are asking for installation of fencing equipment to be done within 24 hours, the cost will inevitably be extremely high. It seems the mismanagement will cause some serious financial losses due to sheer negligence on the part of the organisers.
It seems that the overall apathetic and informal attitude by the officials has caused some massive embarrassment and tarnished the image of the 34th National Games of India. The tournament gave a good opportunity for officials to show off their
management skills, but unfortunately the opposite seems to have occurred.
It is hoped that the event officials can get their act together to put on a decent fencing event.
