351m 400 modification

I built a 351m 400 ford engine.

I have s***w in studs, 7/16 base 7/16 top. Running BB Chevy stampted rockers and poly locks...But now it seems that my push rods are too short, is this common? How do I know which pushrods to buy in length...running a mech cam , soild lifters

  1. I think this is something for your machine shop that is used to building custom engines should help you with.  doing it wrong has serious consequences.


  2. it should be set up with a dial indicater to measure the lift on the cam to find the length of the rod minus the alowance for ajustment. and dont forget you need to check the lift on the exhaust and on the intake as it will be diferent. if you dont know what your doing u should find someone who does so u dont ruin your motor, there is no trial and era there.

  3. First off, you need a machine shop. Do not proceed as you are out of your depth. Second, are you sure you want to complete this project? The 351/400 is impossible to wring the horsepower out of. I know it's considered a big block but it really generates horsepower and durability of a small block. A better small block choice would be the old push rod 350 Chevy motor or, if you can find it, the 351 Cleveland. The Chevy would be cheaper to build too! You won't have to deal with overheating in either of these motors either.
