Im currently 36+5 weeks pregnant and have just taken in my best mates jack russell terrier as she can no longer take care of her, the dog was apprently brought up with young children before my mate had her, the dog has been moved from person to person so I really cant turn her away, has anyone had any experience in introducing the dog to the baby when he arrives? and what is the best way to to it?

  1. Hi the only thing that you can do is wait and see what the dog is like when you bring home your baby, if the dog is fine with people then it will be fine with a baby, its common sense anyways not to leave you baby alone for 5 mins, I have 4 dogs and I am 30 weeks pregnant and even thought I trust my dogs I still wouldnt leave a baby unattended, If you introduce baby a little at a time or wait for your dog to come round herself then you dog will be fine, Really you only have to worry when you baby is moveing around and trying to pull at your dogs fur, this might cause any dog to snap but you will know your dog once it settles into you home.

I almost think that dogs can sense you carring your baby anyways so the dog will probably know your baby is here sort of anyway and probably wont even bat an eyelid once your baby arrieves. My dogs didnt, when my nephew was born, my sister in law and brother used to visit us regulary and my dog who is not all that good with people he doesnt know, used to sniff my sister in laws tummy like he knew she had a baby in there and then once he was here and she bought my nephew round my dog just didnt even bother lol, and he loves him now.

As you baby will still be too young to see your dog see how your dog reacts to you when you bring baby home. I have a jack russel and she is lovely and soft and doesnt even acknowlegty my baby nephew when he comes to stay so maybe it will be the same for your dog.

  2. O h dear the dog has moved from person to person it is a good idea to ask why. A Jack Russell is a dog of uncertain temperament, are you an experienced dog owner? They are not a dog for first timers. ( I love them having had several)

You need to speak to an experienced dog trainer, my advise would be to give the dog to a reputable animal charity who could find it a good (and permanent) home. Your baby comes first.
