Question:

36 weeks pregnant, costochondritis?

I want suggestions from people who have actually developed costcochondritis (inflammation of the rib cartilage) while pregnant. I have been prescribed panadol and codeine, neither of which have helped. I am supposed to get pethidine injections tomorrow, and have been living in a hot bath lately. I have been told the pain of this is equivalent to the pain of a heart attack, and is grounds to have an emergency c-section performed at 38 weeks. How can I survive the next two weeks, when I just want to cry in agony now?

  1. You might want to read further on this by clicking the below link.  I am confused as to why they would prescribe Codeine when you are pregnant.  Try to use something more compatible with the pregnancy as a pain reliever so as not to interfere with the baby while in utero. Cross check the list of meds for use while pregnant.

  2. I developed it when I was about 15 years old. I was not pregnant, but I know what you mean. It is horrible! They gave me vicodin or percocet I cannot remember which one, but it seemed to help.

Since you are pregnant and cannot take those, I would talk to your doctor. Maybe they can do a c-section earlier and get you on something that will relieve your pain. Good luck!
